Overview

Launched at the AI zeitgeist era, the Neverinstall AI tool utilizes similar operations underneath the hood that’s emulated by the current largest players to enable OS level AI assistance. With the context of our virtualized desktop, this AI tool was an industry-first showcase of how mundane everyday tasks that are usually time consuming and repetitive can be altered with clever engineering.

Designing for this use case also presented me with an opportunity to think for larger than life implications and create a modal that was intuitive, ever-present and scalable.

Context

With the rise of ChatGPT, we reimagined our AI-assisted cloud platform for our virtualized workspaces. The key was finding the right form factor - one that balanced seamless integration and novel interaction.

Catering to our core users, the goal was a natural extension that enhanced productivity and creativity through intelligent assistance. Striking this balance between the obvious and the innovative was central to our development.

Increased developer productivity

Revenue-generating prospects

User retention and engagement

Appealing to entry-level coders

Brainstorming with
the team

With several stakeholders and various opinions for a range of priorities, compromise and prioritising was key to getting to our first iteration.

The big picture

How might we create an ever-present AI assistant that leverages OS context to drive awareness and adoption of this pioneering feature?

Design

The main design consideration at play here is to balance novelty and create a habit-forming, invaluable feature. With our core product focusing on liberating hardware accessibility, our feature launches definitely needed to follow suit.

Usability

Induced familiarity

Engaging & distinct interaction

Designed for contextual development, design & content use

First iteration

In parallel, a three-week sprint produced a promotional video showcasing the vision for this feature, which helped garner stakeholder and user buy-in on the form factor, aesthetics, and broad applicability from the outset.

Stakeholder inputs

Feedback collected across key stakeholder groups reveals diverse perspectives and priorities, highlighting both the complexity and opportunity inherent in our design decisions.

Emphasize features during the onboarding process to improve user discovery

Provide a guided tour as soon as users enter their workspace, and make sure to clearly explain how the AI feature is utilized

Changing the design based on insights

The changes outlined below were informed by feedback gathered through our previous conversations.

Improving dock functionality within Spaces

Adding tooltips tactically in the user journey

Improving micro-interactions

Designing for mobile interfaces

To enable mobile access to virtual desktops, we developed a custom interaction tailored for the constraints of handheld devices.

Deliver

Owing to the zeitgeist nature of the feature we were launching, we had to keep a close monitor on the user behaviour post release to be able to quickly iterate and evolve.

Reflections

Our AI's initial success was driven by focused functionality and rapid iteration - combining strong visual context with guided workflows - leading to accelerated adoption after a well-received launch.

While pivoting to B2B drove growth, increasing security requirements led to design compromises that favored enterprise needs over user experience.
